Thanks for the replies.This is not my usual collecting area so do not know the different pontil marks but I have attached a photo. I would not normally have bought it but it came in a box of other bottles which I wanted. :)

Thanks for the revealing pontil pic, yes that explains the strangeness. It is either continental or American with that iron residue pontil. Depending on its finding circumstances I would likely take a bet on American in that this pontil is more popular there than on the continent...maybe...Earlyglass

You are so lucky over there to have such a wealth of beautiful crude bottles . We here in Australia do occasionally find such items from when our colony was fledgeling . My dad and I did find a few very early black glass bottles in Sydney harbour around where the early whaling stations were .
