Im not a bottle expert. But a friend of mine recently showed me a couple of old bottles which I was fascinated by. Having done a small amount of internet research my interest for one item particularly has grown - mostly because we can't find much about it!This most interesting item is a Torpedo shaped bottle and is from the Universal Glaciarium and Ice Making Co Ltd Southport. I find this fascinating because this was an ice rink which was only open for 10 years between 1879 and 1889. Which makes me think a bottle of this type might be quite unusual. My friend isn't looking to sell this but we'd like to know some more about it. If anyone has any information ??
The 2nd item is probably less interesting generally. However as I live very close to here it was made I was quite taken with it. This is a small dark fat bottle embossed with "AJ Wintle Bill Mills nr. Ross"
Again it seems that this bottle maker was not around for long and was similar period to the southport bottle.
If anyone has any more information we would be fascinated to know more about either bottle. Thanks
andyf

With regard to your query concerning A.J. Wintle, here is a framed advertising sign for the company seen last Sunday at the BBR Autumn Extravaganza at Elsecar.
The bottle you describe sounds like one of their dumpy seltzers. They did not manufacture the bottle, just had it made with their details embossed on it.

A.J. Wintle & Sons were known to have been trading for at least the period 1881-1909 with a factory in Bill Mills, Pontshill, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire.

That makes a lot more sense. In fact there was a soft drinks manufacturing plant at the same location right up until relatively recently-that company Dayla still exists, but has now moved from Bill Mills. Still, A J Wintle were not there too long, so it must be a pretty old bottle, which is a nice piece of history

The a j wintle bottle you posted is a beer bottle, nice bottle, price would be about £5 on a good day,

I think your beer bottle may also be a split size ? Anyone else ?

The differences between a seltzer and a beer bottle are only the proportions, the shape and therefore descriptions of the 2 are the same which is why your description was misidentified,

Any chance of a pic of the hamilton/torpedo ?

The small dark fat bottle sounds like a seltzer to me, but the hammy has got interesting wording on it and in a good font .

If the scale helps at all here is the fat bottle next to a standard (uninteresting modern) wine bottle. Really appreciating the feedback. Thanks everyone !

A picture of the beer had been posted above already Poacher, I wasn't guessing like old oxford, i had it easy I'd seen the picture, of the small dark fat bottle, it's a beer bottle, and the torpedo/hamilton also very low value and unappreciated part of our past, much better to keep and enjoy for the small value, thanks for sharing,

Where did you find them ? Or your friend find them ?any background etc ?

No history on them at all I'm afraid. Been hiding in a garage for years and could have come from anywhere. Not looking to sell them at all just sheer curiosity
