Thanks to Poachers advice re using Jenolite on rust, the badly stained Scarborough lid is coming on ok.This was as dug.

This is now. Still with Jenolite in use.Just a few stains that wont shift.Still dont know if its one thats worth having restored.

Mix hydrogen peroxide with jenolite 1st, it makes the red come to the surface and use tissue to take it all out, then it's clear for use, the it won't stain the lid, or leave lid in hydrogen peroxide after to take it colouring out, either or, cistern after for months I like to do as well,

Never seen it do that before like them pink tumour like things, did you mix hp and jenolite and not tissue it out or something ? confused at your outcome from just being told jenolite, when they changed jenolite from clear to red years back, we turned a lid bright pink, and potlid Paul of abc told my old man the hydrogen peroxide trick,

I'm glad its working as I swear by the stuff:) I use it on gingers, flagons and whatever I have to repair, plus my own collection if need be. I did read here in the forum, its best not used on clay pipes though as it turns them pink!:D However, I have got a small tube of Jenolite too and its clear and not pink.

With a bit of patience, all the rust will come out and then a good soaking in clean water is advised as to purge the chemicals out after the treatment. Then its ready to restore:cool: Its a beautiful lid and well worth the effort:satisfied:

Thanks for the replies everyone. I will keep you posted as to how I am getting on. If this one is a success I will have a rummage through all the boxes of stuff I have in the shed and see if there is anything that needs sorting. I have a feeling there will be.
Just one thing and that is what strength hydrogen peroxide do I need ?

60 40 jenolite hydrogen peroxide, think 11% is good enough, there's also a 35%, hydrogen peroxide is a bleach used for hair and teeth and juse so happens to split the dye from the jenolite,

I used to keep a book on percentages and calculations, etc, but my old man does everything in his head and bloody ridiculously good at it too, which didn't much help my records, and he can clean stoneware, anything, to a T, got the acids properly sussed, practicing o scrap broken bits etc, it's worthwhile in the long run to do the same, keep records of what you used and the outcomes you've got, and one day you'll be so good when you dig something you'll know straightaway you can clean it and make it mint, or whether it's burnt to f..... and not worth a carrot, which is always worth knowing immediately for in the picks,
