I have had a great deal of enjoyment over the last few weeks looking through threads on this site. It's only fair that I should post a few photos of some of the bottles we find here. I hope you find some interest in these - if not there are other threads to look through !

First an iconic SA bottle - Coca nut oil - called "Sweet Oil" or "Soetolie" over here:

This was widely used as a salad dressing (& also I believe as a hair dressing !)

The label shows that the product was sold by a firm in Pretoria; the bottle would, almost undoubtedly, have been made overseas, probably in England.

This one was for snuff : "Otto Landsberg's Celebrated Snuff". Why they chose blue glass, usually associated with medicine, beats me. Perhaps because it made you sneeze and cleared your head? They didn't know what it was doing to your nose inside ! (Mind you, if one looked at one's handkerchief, it didn't need much imagination!)

A nice feature is that the bottle has Cape Town embossed at the rear:

And South Africans are fond of their meat - especially with tasty sauces:

This one is especially appropriate today; we are celebrating Heritage Day (don't ask me why!) and people all over the country will be "braaing" ie cooking (or burning!) meat over outdoor fires. (& drinking lots of beer etc!!)

Here are some details of the label:

The bottle and label would have been made overseas - but some strange things have happened to the lettering of "LONDON" !

Hi, Old Oxford - indeed, I wonder if it was a case of inserting a letter upside down from a printer's tray to create the embossing ? I have had other bottles with reversed letters, notably the letter S.

Mind you it's difficult to explain this one away ! I know E is next to R on the keyboard, but I'm sure they weren't using "Word for Windows" when they set this line !

As a British Colony, the Cape naturally received its share of British type bottles - and the Codd was no exception ! Here is a typical one, from very close to where I stay - Simon's Town, once a British naval base.

The glass on this one is very nice & clean; I'm afraid much of our glass tends to be very sick, or cloudy at the least. To do with the acid content of the soil they were buried in (or so I am told!)

That first bottle is familiar here in the UK Dale and we dug a broken one yesterday. I guess they are a condiment of some sort and they are known generically as pepper sauces in my area.:ermm:

All this talk of food is making me hungry:D
