Hi, I know there is a lot of argument about the contents of this birdcage type bottle. Some say ink, others sherbet. I just want to know the rarity and value of this bottle, please.

It actually held perfume, there have been a couple of sun-coloured examples on eBay recently. One American seller ground the burst lip down because (quote) "I think it looks better". Bottle vandal !

Wanted --- any unusual items from Kent & the South East, including advertising, early stoneware, & bottles (of course!).  Also rare patent poisons, early pontilled medicines, & rare burst lip/teakettle inks.

Perfume by all accounts. I dug two both with silvery paper stuck around the burst top.

Looking at this colour I can't help thinking this is altered (selinium springs to mind) and there is or was one very similar on us eBay buy it now same sort of colour with the top ground down. Never seen another this colour and see two within a week.

Forgot to add the design was registered by James Lewis, who was a London perfumer well-known for his miniature & novelty shaped bottles. Guy Burch will reveal all when the inks book is published (hint hint !). Still a great figural, mine sits quite happily in my ink collection, together with other types which we now know are lamps.

Will this link work or not ?.

It does state that selenium is usually found in later machine made bottles (eBay seller xseller8 had plenty of clear banana feeders in strange amber hues) but can be found in earlier bottles.

There is a unique and certain 'look' about this colour that you don't get with traditional amber glass.
