Don't know anything about sealed bottles or case gins, had this one for donkeys years don't know anything about it, couldn't see much on the forum about sealed case gins so thought I'd post this:

It has a crude applied lip:

A Pontil scar:

And an applied seal which reads Bal & Co beneath a crown.

Any information regarding the bottle or the type of pontil scar very much appreciated, the bottle has sagged sides and the bottom is so lop-sided that I daren't stand it on a shelf, it's a lovely bottle though! In my opinion of course!

Cheers all!

Very nice gin, but looks more like a mould mark & not a pontil.

Wanted --- any unusual items from Kent & the South East, including advertising, early stoneware, & bottles (of course!).  Also rare patent poisons, early pontilled medicines, & rare burst lip/teakettle inks.

Agree with John - not a pontil…. these crude gins can display features which suggest they are earlier than they really are.

Thanks for the response fellas!

Here's a juxtaposition with a clearly, imo, later case gin, (no jam scones this time) the difference in quality in terms of the moulding is clear here, although the sealed example is cruder by far, it does seem a much better quality example of the bottle-blowers' art!

The base of the later bottle also bears some scarring, the texture of the mould base is clear in this shot, I assumed the scarring on this one to be where the still soft bottle had been stood on an iron ring to cool. Interesting comments regarding what I had assumed to be a Pontil-rod scar!

Ah I do like case gins and get very excited when one comes out!

Thanks lads!

These Dutch gins when pontilled have a tubular scar, distinctly circular and in heavy 3D relief, sometimes protruding 10mms or so and so sharp you could cut yourself on them. Do a search on ebay, there will surely be some on the US site and have a look for comparison purposes.

Here's one for sale over here, even older than yours judging by the 'pig snout' lip but still having used a 'snap' not a pontil in manufacture.

Never mind the bottle! What about the banjo in the background. English zither banjo C.1890, budget model probably made by Houghton of Birmingham,or one of the London makers, do you play?

Hi banjoplucker, you correctly identified a Zither banjo in the background yes. It's a Dulcet, the tone ring machined to take a modern replacement Remo head.

Yeah I have played in the past, made a semi-living from music for thirty years, mostly playing Bass, Guitar, Mando, blues harp and bits of Banjo, currently inactive.

Cheers bud, keep on Rollin'...
