My wife's great aunt passed away a few months ago and because she heard I collected bottles had wanted me to have a copy of an article she wrote in 'Post Medieval Archaeology. Volume 8' dated 1974....

http://www.bottledigging.org.uk/forum/Uploads/Images/20b1bf1d-98c8-4680-8ea2-5334.JPG

It didn't excite me at first until I saw a piece of paper placed at page 29....

http://www.bottledigging.org.uk/forum/Uploads/Images/ed8257e7-00c7-4c7a-8481-3d93.JPG

To be honest I was taken aback as to how much research she had untertaken on such a fascinating field (especially to us) but to think this was when I started collecting (1974) and the year that Edward Fletcher was publishing his very first books is quite astonishing! - I think even more astounding though to me was the inclusion of the diagrams, as I'm unsure as to where she sourced them from? - I'm sure the Codd collectors amongst you will say these images have been published before and that they were purely copied. But there are no credits given, unlike some of the drawings of bottles featured (eg 'Bruce Henry Collection') - I'd be interested to know if that is the case. Here are some of the drawings/ plates..........

http://www.bottledigging.org.uk/forum/Uploads/Images/c622e56b-74bc-4115-88b9-4f7d.JPG

You can see above that Olive clearly makes reference to diagram 'B' as: '...from article on Nicolas Paul in Review of April 1878' but the other two ('A' & 'C') not, which makes me believe she had access to those bottles? Maybe I'm clutching at straws

The next diagrams had me intrigued, as it looked like the bulb-top Codd could have been hers and she drew it (?) as once again no accreditation on that one, but 'Bruce Henry Collection' on the other two

http://www.bottledigging.org.uk/forum/Uploads/Images/cc3c0822-d5aa-479f-9e9a-5478.JPG

Then when I saw the following diagram also with no accrediation I realised I must be wrong !!! :w00t:......

http://www.bottledigging.org.uk/forum/Uploads/Images/abc7ca21-dd2d-4487-acff-22ac.JPG

.... and there was me thinking she may have owned these odd few bottles and had drawn them for her article, perhaps not!

If anyone could throw any light on the illustrations I'd be very grateful. There is a twist to the tale too!!

This article has been revered for many years by mineral water collectors, still surprises some with the research. It's of particular interest to me because it mentions the screw top codd design which was used by the Silver Spring company in Kent. It illustrates a bottle simply embossed 'Wm Barnard & Sons London' near the base, & advertised at the time as 'The Perfect Mineral Water Bottle --- Barrett's Screw Stopper & Codd's Patent Glass Ball, United. Fills With any Codd's Filling Machine'. Therefore it confirmed what many collectors have thought all along, that these bottles were probably produced as a sales gimmick to advertise the two different closures. Certainly is a small world !

Thanks John. Interesting about the Kent connection with the 'Barrett's Codd' ! - I bet you'd quite like one of those!
Were any of Olive's illustrations seen prior to 1974? - If not, where would she have obtained the drawings from?(there's a reason why I ask this!)

I was one of the underbidders on an example that was on eBay some time ago, but quite happy with my Silver Spring. Still looking for a 10oz version which are very difficult to source. Afraid I can't help regarding her illustrations.

I've got that particular article by Olive Talbot (given to me by a collecting friend many years ago). At the time I can remember thinking what a knowledgeable lady she must be. A pioneer with her research.

I think the sad thing is that I didn't know she was Erin's great aunt until after she passed away. I also had no idea about her article and the 'bottle connection'!
