With the "30 Strand" address & "BLACKING BOTTLE" written on it then it's quite easy to date 1817 - 1834, & I would say with that style of mouth then more likely early/mid 1820's.

I picked one up on Ebay USA very similar to your Dads not so long ago for 30 quid & even thou I had to pay another £16 for excise & vat/handling charges, I was quite happy (I assume it holds a pint(ish) as in about 7 inches tall)? .......

Am getting closer to publishing a book on all of these blacking bottles so if anybody has any rare ones or any for sale please let me know....

Sorry for going of topic a bit Dave but I hope this helps !

Codd & Blacking Greetings ..

Historically important bottle?? No less than Charles Dickens worked at Warrens Blacking factory in the 1820s!!

Bibliophiles/Dickens collectors/museum might go mad for it. Offer it to Simon Callow - 500 quid.

from wiki:

"To pay for his board and to help his family, Dickens was forced to leave school and work ten-hour days at Warren's Blacking Warehouse, on Hungerford Stairs, near the present Charing Cross railway station, where he earned six shillings a week pasting labels on pots of boot blacking. The strenuous and often harsh working conditions made a lasting impression on Dickens and later influenced his fiction and essays, becoming the foundation of his interest in the reform of socio-economic and labour conditions, the rigours of which he believed were unfairly borne by the poor. He later wrote that he wondered "how I could have been so easily cast away at such an age".[21] As he recalled to John Forster (from The Life of Charles Dickens):"

You could be holding the very bottle that inspired him
