Its been a long time since I last posted, thought I'd post a picture of some of my tools. The round mouth Bulldog with a all steel shaft is great for taking off a hard capping and for prizing, I made the long handled one myself, which is good for going deep, the hardest part hard was finding the shaft as you can't exactly buy them from B&Q. All so stuck a new shaft on my fork this afternoon. I just need a tip to dig now :P

A long handled American style bullnose is a handy thing to have, but you need plenty of room to swing it; it does tend to put a lot of strain on your hip area though.:ermm:

I cant use mine on my local tip, so I picked up an old well used steel bullnose from me dad(painted all red!) for close quarter skirmishes. I'm going to have to paint the damn thing first before taking it out :D

Great resourcefulness Andrew!

As a matter of interest, these long-handled shovels originate from Cornwall where they were commonplace amongst miners and farmers from the 1860's (and are often referred to as simply 'Cornish Shovels') they take a bit of getting used to (especially if you're sharing a hole!) but really do save on your back and you can throw the spoil far further! - With the influx of the Cornish miners in the mid-1800's it doesn't surprise me that these implements were adapted in the Americas and Australasia (and elsewhere)

We mostly use these long handled shovels here in OZ as it saves a lot of back pain with bending for the short handled ones. The main thing with using these is to make sure that the hole you are digging is at least 1 and a half times longer than the shovel and then there is no problem getting down many feet in depth.
