I have just got around to photographing all the hybrid Codds currently in my collection. As many of you will know a hybrid’s shape and being in aqua glass makes it difficult to get the correct lighting set up for a good close up pic and I have often discarded trial sets of pics in the past because they were not good enough. However I think I’ve managed it this time and I’m quite pleased with the results. Assume the bottles are 10 ounce unless stated otherwise.

Pics 1,2, & 3, the front & reverse of an early bottle from The Kent Mineral Water Company, New Cross South London. The first pic shows the stand that I used for all the pics.

Pic 4 the later version which also includes the Company trademark of an eye.

Pic 5 & 6 the front & reverse of an early hybrid embossed ‘ Newling / New Cross’ (Cross-is pictorially embossed) another South London Company.

None of the above three were dug and therefore apart from cleaning the dust off them they have not been cleaned in any way. They are all very rare and possibly no more than two or three of each hybrid may exist.

Pic 7 & 7a speak for themselves and that is a green marble (my personal joint favourite hybrid with the next one). This is a fabulous bottle I don’t know of another recorded example and I know that there some serious collector friends of mine out there who would dearly love to get their hands on it.

Pic 8 the pictorial Trademark on this bottle is absolutely stunning, I believe it to be an angel with ‘Purity’ embossed underneath and surrounded by ‘Manufactured with Filtered Water’ and Trade Mark. The rear is embossed ‘Codds patent 4 / Makers / Codd & Rylands/ Barnsley’, this is also the only known example as far as I’m aware.

Pic 9 the first of two from South Africa embossed ‘The Shilling / Aerated Water Factory / Kimberley’. No rear embossing but probable made in the U.K. and exported to South Africa. This bottle made its way back here as it was recovered during dredging operations from Rochester dockyard in Kent in the late 1980’s and subsequently went into my collection.

Pic 10 also South African embossed ‘A Khan with pictorial stag Trademark Johannesburg’. Rear embossed ‘Acme Patent 4 / Sole Maker / Dan Rylands / Barnsley’. A pictorial trademark like this should have come from a Scottish Company.

Pics 11 &12 the front and reverse of a Breffits patent from A Wyatt, Ryde, Isle of Wight, another stunner and still very rare.

Pics 13,14 & 15 the front and reverse of a 6 ounce Goffe & Sons Birmingham bulb and the first of the only three 6 ounce hybrids I have in the collection.

Pics 16 & 17 another 6 ounce embossed ‘T Brewster / Mineral Water / Manufacturer’ no rear embossing. This Company operated from Great Suffolk Street, South London.

Pics 18 & 19 the third 6 ounce, front embossed 'S Chambers / Henry Street / Bermondsey', rear embossing ‘Patent Safe Groove / 4 / Makers / Dan Rylands / Barnsley’. This company is also from South London.

Pics 20 & 21 front embossed ‘S Chambers & Co / Henry Street / Bermondsey’, rear embossed ‘Codds Patent / Rylands & Codd / Makers / Stairfoot / Barnsley / 4’. Note the ‘& Co, added to the company name.

Pics 22 & 23 front embossed ‘S Chambers Barrett & Co’ rear embossed ‘Codds Patent / 4 / Maker / Dan Rylands / Barnsley’. Note ‘Barrett’ has been added to the Company Name.

Pics 24 & 25 the front and reverse of an early hybrid from The Chislehurst Mineral Water Company

Pic 26 The later version from the Chislehurst the rear embossed ‘Codds Patent / Rylands & Codd / Makers / Stairfoot / Barnsley / 4’.

The Chislehurst Company factory was situated less than 2 miles from my front door and the above two bottles were the first hybrids that went into my collection.

Stunning photos of some truly stunning bottles.

That Barnett & Foster is just breathtakingly good:w00t::w00t::w00t:

Particularly interested in the angel/cherrub example as I have the narrow neck from this company.

Many thanks for taking the time to show them on here.

Stu:)

Wow and double WOW!!!!!!! What a super collection:w00t:
How long has it taken you to amass them?
I actually pulled 3 out of the ash on a group dig in Kettering but ended up with none in the draw/picks,iam understandably not a fan of this way of share outs. never even knew what company they came from. Come to think of it i ended up with bugger all any good from that dig!
Have never dug any since, very elusive bottles. Well done you:D:D

Nice to see them like that Brian, thanks for posting.

and Fred the fact that you pulled three hybrids out yourself should have meant you got one,the folk who organised the dig should be ashamed of themselves for letting this happen and if this was not a machine dig then they should be even more ashamed.;)
