As quite a few people are aware, I've been working on a new pot lid book that aims to cover ALL UK/Irish lids....yes, that is right! I thought it would be a good opportunity to update these who have already contributed and explain its objectives to anyone else who can help. Firstly, all images have been taken in the strictest confidence - with close to 200 contributors to date as well as museums, at the end of the day it will be impossible to know who owns what anyway.

Where are we now…

Well, to date, we now have over 4,600 distinct pot lid images – the vast majority are high quality and will look astounding when reproduced & printed. I have written in-excess of 100,000 words – to give you an idea, that’s three times the number in the ointment pot book. The text provides histories of many of the well known companies that used pot lids as well as coverage on some of the rarer, more desirable examples. The research corrects many previous assumptions and helps to pinpoint precise dates when certain lids were used & produced. I’ve written the text in a less academic way which is easier (and more enjoyable) to read. So far, I’ve recorded well in excess of 6,000 lids, possibility more – but there’s still a long way to go.

What’s next…

I’m pleased that quite a number of ‘new’ people have agreed to contribute to the book and I’m hoping by mid-summer their input will push the number of images towards 5,500 (or more with luck). Also, as well as getting ‘someone’ important to write the ‘Forward’ for the book, I have already recorded a previously ‘unseen’ museum collection – their specialism, bears grease! So, over the next few months, I’ll be travelling around the country to record certain key collections and meeting people at future fairs.

Where do I want to be…

Personally, I won’t be happy until I have at least 6,000 quality images and every lid in ALL previous books, auction catalogues/listings, magazines etc are at least recorded. So, there’s still an enormous amount of hard work to do – but I’m working on it every day, just ask my wife! It won’t be on the Christmas list for 2010 but maybe soo afterwards. At the end of day, all I want (and those I’ve spoken too) is a comprehensive book that is a delight and something you can refer to time and time again.

If you can help please let me know - an unrecorded lid (even a button lid), adverts to support the text, research, the ability to bring a few rarities to a show etc. Lastly, a MASSIVE thank you to all those who have contributed to date - without you this would not be making such good progress.

Many thanks - Bob Houghton

PS Send me a PM if you can help.

This is a great project and deserves a lot of support...

Do you have a list of what you HAVE photographed so far... maybe I could put it up here so people can "check off" what they have got against it....?

Excellent Heroic task!   Given you have used digital photography - will you be printing all in colour? I suspect b&W lids wont need it -but colour plates will be a must - although at significant cost.

wil1 yr price ponit be around £50... I would spend that on it - if not to just see CHL  bears greases.

Good luck
