One thing i noticed is they all have the same unique shield like surround around the EB and the symbol that looks like a number 4 gone wrong! I wonder if this is a family type shield that surrounds all these and if the clue is in the design of this shield like design! Just a thought..

Heres a nice Bellarmine I havent put on here before. 1550 to 1580,s......three medallions to three sides with a possible Roman style? pictorial face in a circle and surrounded by Acanthus leaves. Alongside it are three objects that I picked up today. Two are from roughly the same time period as the jug and one is a lot older.
1.Spoon dates to about 1560
2.small ointment 1580 -1600.
3. Small drinking bowl/cup 1380 - 1500

eclipsepatent (14/02/2012) One thing i noticed is they all have the same unique shield like surround around the EB and the symbol that looks like a number 4 gone wrong! I wonder if this is a family type shield that surrounds all these and if the clue is in the design of this shield like design! Just a thought..I guess anything is possible Wayne, especially as these are as far as we know, the arms of someone from Amsterdam. I have had a look on the internet on quite a few sites that seem to suggest that shield design was left up to the designer of the arms or that shield design doesnt mean anything. My logical thought would be that shield design would mean an awful lot! The strange thing about this design is that its never been seen before on a Bellarrmine until a couple of years ago.Certainly very interesting and a very magical looking design i.m.o.
Its hard to read whats written here, but just trying to show what this information says: THE SHIELD SHAPE OR ANGLE 'The shape changed through the centuries at the descretion of the Heralds and Artists' Also this example is based on British arms and ours is most likely as far as we know....Dutch....could well be a different story altogether ? | Continueing with pictures taken of the excellent Boymans van Beuningen collection of Early stoneware found in Rotterdam after the bombing of the city in world war two. The bombing brought nearly 10,000 items and ancient artifacts to the surface. The curators of the museum sent out people to buy up as many artifacts as they could as builders and just about everybody was finding things during the clean up of the city.Anyway , I put some pics on earlier in this thread somewhere and these are some of the others. Do go there if in Holland, its great and lots of the old masters etc.... are also located there....but this Stoneware section was built just to hold this collection and is located below the restaurant ..if you go to see it.Its on permanent display.

Loads more , but Ill save them for another day Steve

I am packing these two oil jugs away today and thought I would put up a couple of pics before they go into their box. Some people even call these unmasked Bellarmines so guess that gives them a right to go on this Bellarmine thread ?
Both on the small side:
Smallest is 9cm and larger one is 12.5cm (I think)
Lovely even black and brown tiger glaze on the larger jug and the two different contrasting glazes look good when the two jugs are stood alongside each other.

| Fantastic glazes on the jugs, always a pleasure to see some quality items, I have a similar example to the oil bottles, this time with a mask. The cordon is similar to the ones used for oil, so I presume it contained the same as yours. Small size just under 13cm but the glaze is a bit washed.

Hello Carl,
Very interesting face, it would be good to see a more close up picture of the facial detail if you get the time. The positioning of the glaze spot to the eye looks like a sort of pupil has been given to it......
The size and shape/Cordon do seem very similar and I guess it could have had an oil use as well.
I think they probably held many different liquids and were refilled with whatever the owner felt like.
I guess we only call the small ones of this shape oil jugs as maybe theres some limited proof of this....but doubt very much just because of this small shape and cordon, that they all held just oil.
Saying that though, definitely too small for wine or beer decanting. Some of them were said to have held mercury as well ! Hopefully they didnt refill those ones with a beverage after the initial usage.
Lovely colour to your jug also.
Thanks for showing it.
All the best,
Steve
