Thanks Rob for the advice. It looks ok,but i have'nt had one this colour and it has a sort of darker dipped top half. Not the most exciting of Bellarmines but cheap at £250 plus £10 postage. It came on ebay at a buy it now. The people who sold the bottle seemed very genuine and also nice and said it was found during ground works at Bath which is somewhere in the uk! pontilled black hamilton land me thinks! Is this just a German Bellarmine?  as someone has suggested that it may be English which never crossed my mind.

I am no further forward with researching a definite merchant or family mark found on these types of Bellarmines(It is now known that they were destined for Amsterdam though,or at least an Amsterdam merchant or Family), although I have found out an interesting snippet that could well be relevant to them.

Its possible that its a merchants mark based on the rune four symbol (although in reverse ?)which refers, according to Christian and occult magic tradition, to the four Gospels, the four evagelists, the four quarters, the four seasons, the four elements(Air,fire, water and earth),etc. The use of runes on medallions and bottle seals and as a merchant marks was widespread in Europe in the 15th - 18th century.

and thats all for now

Steve

OMG look at him, he's so cute

Wonder if it was the way the more pagan element of society were able to communicate their beliefs under the very noses of the Christians, as they were so badly persecuted through history, were branded witches and executed around the time these vessels were used.

All the best,
Nat
