| I recently purchased this beautiful James Atkinson's bears grease lid, price 5 shilling and when displayed next to my Dad's realised that it has a subtle difference. Both are genuine, not 1970's repros. The bear in my example (pictured left), has a tail whereas my Dad's (pictured right) does not. I trawled the internet (and this forum) for more variations and could not see any like mine. Could this possibly be an earlier or later example?

| Looks like it could be a bit of print missing from the leg rather than a tail? Bears don't have long tails as far as I know. Cheers Mark

I like the lids obviously but they always make me think about the cruelty involved with Bears in the 19th cent [still going on today] and the amount of Bears shot dead or trapped to provide grease to rub into hair.Same kind of thing as the Tiger trade today.Glad that Bears grease went out of fashion.
I think the lid on the left is a bit older than the lid on the right + has a superior transfer print.A lot more depth and detail in it than the other lid and the print on it looks ever so slightly off centre.
