They're tiny and very smooth. A lot of guys in the antiques trade use them for cleaning wine residue from decanters.

ALWAYS take cutting tools. Heavy choppers for thick roots, & shears for small ones. You're guaranteed to need them if you havn't got them! A headtorch is usefull if you're in a deep trench or under trees. A plastic snow shovel is ideal for shifting ash, dust & light spoil - far far lighter than a steel one.

Something I will do from now on. Have you managed to bend a fork tine on tough capping or the like. It is not easy to get it back in line by standing on it! and it certainly makes for difficult forking for the rest of the day. Answer: Take a two foot length of mild steel conduit with you, more to carry I know but it WILL come in useful.

Cheers, Nick

Hi All Diggers, Just came up with this Safety tip for your forks, use the Nozzle covers you get with the Silicone Sealants to put over the fork ends, stops them making a hole in your Kitbag or catching yourself on, JEFFGEE.

Always take off any rubbish you have left over after the dig. Why? you may ask.?.a mate of mine was on a night dig up in geordie land on an up and coming must dig tip..thats all the rage at the mo to nite dig..he was tucked up in bed a few days later.after getting over the experience of some wonderful gear that had cleaned up well which he had dug..when a request was made by the local police force for him to report to the local nick..seems the northumberland police force were wanting an interview with him over a case of a poorly back filled ole and the fact his D.N.A had been found on a cigerette butt discarded on the dig..seems that any rubbish left which has been handled by you can be used in evidence of a crime of criminal damage..even after the event and thats why i alway's take off the dig what i have taken on...leave no trace..saves a fine/caution or a prison sentence
should of said he heard there was bottle digging going on and decied to go for a walk and dropped it. i also heard this story but they already had his D.N.A from a previous dig i heard

Circumstantial evidence doesnt prove anything solid in itself other than someone being there at the time the evidence was left there. That would have been my defence anyway providing that there werent any other witnesses that would say otherwise.

Always have plenty of thirst aid like cold drink or cans of beer etc and a roll of silver duct tape for first aid and dont try to break thick tree roots with a garden fork as it breaks the prongs off them.I managed to do that with a couple of my dads garden forks when i went digging in the woods back in the early 80s and these were good quality Spear + Jackson forks
